The first building implemented under Texas A&M’s 2018 Campus Master Plan, the Plant Pathology & Microbiology Building established a new model for how advanced research, contemporary pedagogy, and campus identity intersect. Positioned along the university’s primary pedestrian corridor, the facility was designed not only to support high-level agricultural research, but to actively engage students, visitors, and future faculty in the work taking place inside.

The facility combines a four-story research tower housing Microbiology, Plant Pathology, and Agricultural Science laboratories with a three-story instructional wing organized around 21st-century learning environments. Designed to meet BSL-2-P requirements, the building includes 20 flexible research labs, shared support spaces, and specialized infrastructure that allows research environments to adapt as priorities and funding evolve.

Instructional spaces reflect contemporary teaching models, including a 300-seat tiered lecture hall, registrar-controlled multipurpose classrooms, and seminar rooms designed for flexibility and collaboration. 

Designed in partnership with Flad Architects, the architecture bridges Texas A&M’s historic brick heritage with the contemporary character of nearby research facilities, setting a precedent for future campus development while establishing a strong, forward-looking identity for agricultural sciences. By day, transparent labs and learning spaces activate the pedestrian corridor. By night, the glow of the rooftop greenhouses and corner lantern highlights the research within, reinforcing the building’s role as a visible, active center of discovery.
