The Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at McAllen expands Texas A&M's research presence in the Rio Grande Valley while strengthening the University's growing Higher Education Center campus. Designed as both a state-of-the-art research facility and a campus destination, the building brings together advanced agricultural research, community health initiatives, and student support spaces under one roof.

Site Concept

Diagnostic laboratories are positioned along the primary circulation spine, where carefully placed interior glazing allows students and visitors to observe scientific work in progress while maintaining the security and functionality of the laboratory environments. Two prominent glass entrance "lanterns" anchor the AgriLife and Student Services entries, creating highly visible gathering spaces that reinforce the University's commitment to collaboration, discovery, and student engagement. Commons areas, dining, study spaces, retail, and advising services further strengthen campus life while supporting the continued growth of the McAllen campus.

Organized around flexible laboratory modules, the facility supports research in plant and water diagnostics, Cross Border Threat Screening, biosecurity, precision agriculture, and the Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture. Open laboratories, specialized support spaces, and fabrication labs are planned around standardized research modules and overhead utility distribution, allowing the facility to adapt as research priorities evolve. The building also incorporates highly specialized spaces including diagnostic laboratories, a fabrication center for developing sensors and controls, a clinical research suite, fitness and nutrition teaching spaces, and a demonstration kitchen that supports community-based health research and outreach.
