Preston Scott, AIA

Principal

Preston is a second-generation architect and Principal at Randall Scott Architects.  As son of Founding Principal Randall Scott, Preston was shaped early on by the firm’s history, values, and commitment to service. He embodies the guiding principle of “honor the past and look to the future,” an ethos that informs both his leadership within the firm and his design approach.

Preston is dedicated to public architecture and believes that great buildings coalesce and value all three OAC perspectives (Owner+Architect+Contractor) through the process.  Early in his career, Preston believed that to be a great architect, he must first understand the needs of both his clients and contractors - so he spent time working for both a client on capital projects and for a general contractor.  After his personal experience working for all three sides of the OAC triangle, Preston has developed a unique sensitivity toward client needs and collaboration with contractors through his design process.

Having worked exclusively with civic and university architecture, Preston believes that the clients who oversee public funds benefit by partnering with an architect who has also dedicated their career to the integrity and stewardship of those funds.

Preston and his team at Randall Scott Architects brought the city’s vision for a new municipal complex to life. The building has timeless civic presence and a strong sense of place for public life, which will hopefully serve as the cornerstone for city’s long-term vision for a downtown.

Preston's Perspective

Preston approaches design as a process of discovery, beginning with thoughtful study of the user and the nuances that shape how each space is truly experienced. He describes his planning process as “becoming a student of the user,” developing a diligent and granular understanding of how people will experience, use, and rely on the building. For Preston, every building is unique and thoughtful, shaped by careful listening and observation.

A natural collaborator, Preston is known for asking questions that help stakeholders articulate their needs through design. This curiosity fuels his work in programming and early design, where he finds joy in refining ideas and filtering out what does not belong until the essential story of the project comes into focus. He begins each design process as a shared journey with the client to help tell their story, rather than impose a preconceived solution.

Preston’s work is driven by storytelling and the lived experience in and through the building design.  Capturing the client’s story and etching it into a timeless “one of one” design solution is a distinguishing marker of who Preston is as an Architect.

What Clients Say
About Preston

I was impressed with Preston’s detailed knowledge of the needs in modern law enforcement facilities. The design of our new police facility is a custom design with our input, not just a copy or variation of other facilities [he has] previously designed.

Preston “talked to people in the community and listened to what was said... [The project is] uniquely Aledo and something this community can be proud of for many decades.
