Residence Hall & Dining

The University of Texas Permian Basin

Location Odessa, TX

Completion Date 2015

Size 115,000 SF / 314 Beds

The UTPB Residence Hall and Dining Facility marks the university’s first traditional residence hall and the culmination of more than two decades of collaboration between RSA and the campus on student housing. Located near the academic core, the three-story building provides approximately 310 beds, with a mix of 80 percent private bedroom suites and 20 percent dual-occupancy units, paired with a centralized dining facility serving the surrounding residential community.

The residence hall is organized in a Z-shaped plan that responds to the site’s linear geometry while creating a series of protected courtyards for student recreation and outdoor gathering. These landscaped spaces buffer the extreme West Texas climate and bring daylight and views deep into the building. Stair towers and shared lounge spaces are positioned at the knuckles of the plan, forming natural social hubs and strengthening visual connections between interior spaces and the courtyards.

The attached 15,000 SF, two-story dining facility was designed to serve both residence hall students and those living in nearby student apartment communities, supporting an initial dining population of approximately 400 meal plans with capacity for future expansion. Developed in collaboration with campus foodservice provider Chartwells, the dining hall incorporates the “Pulse on Dining” concept, with multiple servery and food preparation stations offering a range of cuisines and accommodations for special diets. A sculptural serpentine stair and elevator connect both levels, while landscaped outdoor dining areas and a shaded second-floor veranda extend seating and provide flexibility for future growth.

The building’s exterior materials, fenestration, and massing draw from the architectural language established across UTPB’s existing residential communities, reinforcing campus continuity while introducing a more traditional residence hall identity. Together, the residence hall and dining facility establish a new residential anchor for campus life and reflect the maturity of a long-standing housing vision brought to full realization.
