The Nursing and Allied Health Building at Dallas College Mountain View was designed as a defining academic and architectural anchor for the campus. Located at the terminus of the main entrance drive, the project establishes a clear front door and support broader campus revitalization efforts. The facility was planned to consolidate Nursing, Surgical Technology, and Allied Health programs into a highly visible, student-centered environment.
The building’s form and materiality were developed in direct response to the campus setting and name. Sloped tilt-wall construction with a steel superstructure and deeply articulated form liners referenced the rocky terrain of the site, while blue glass and narrow vertical openings suggested rivulets moving down a mountainside. Large glazed areas were oriented to reflect the adjacent lake and landscape, positioning the building as a visual counterpart to the campus water feature.
At the heart of the design was a two-story, daylight-filled atrium oriented toward the lake. Glazed nursing skills and simulation labs were planned along the atrium perimeter, placing health science education on display and reinforcing a “see and be seen” learning environment consistent with contemporary healthcare settings. Innovative headwall systems integrated into the curtainwall mullions were designed to maintain full visibility while supporting highly technical lab functions. A learning stair and inward-facing, two-level auditorium supported teaching in the round, interdisciplinary instruction, and informal student engagement.
The program included general and specialized simulation labs, including ICU and NICU environments, medication rooms, multipurpose classrooms, study spaces, and program administration offices. High-traffic labs and classrooms were planned at the ground level, with faculty offices above to maximize views and reduce disruption. Outdoor classrooms and terraces extended learning into the landscape, while daylighting strategies, angled window systems, and updated material selections expanded the campus palette and supported long-term energy performance.
