TVCC | Cardinal Residence Hall
Construction Cost : $5.9M | SF : 48,320
The TVCC Athens Campus Master Plan prepared by RSA called for a new three phase Residence Hall on the north campus. Cardinal Hall was the first phase of the planned student housing containing 150 beds, a two-story Building Lobby, Study and Recreation Lounges on each floor, a large third floor Meeting Room, a Residence Hall Director’s Apartment and Mail/Vending Room. Architectural imagery of gable roofs and chimney elements communicate the building’s residential purpose. The economical use of brick on the first floor, stucco on the upper two floors and cast stone trim throughout reflects the use of these familial materials on the rest of the Athens campus. The building takes advantage of views toward the college’s football field and a future central courtyard to the east which will provide student recreation areas when completed. An innovative combination of wood frame superstructure, metal deck and concrete floor slabs provided a long term housing solution at a lower cost of construction. Cardinal Hall incorporated an innovative and new highly efficient VRV HVAC system with 40% higher efficiency than split DX units. The design significantly reduced the number of exterior condensing units on the ground reducing their visual impact on the project. The efficiency of this system approaches that of efficiency of a chilled water HVAC system at a much lower construction cost. This project was produced by the RSA Consulting on Revit BIM Software.
